Mountain to Reef: Combining Lore Lindu and Togean

The Central Sulawesi loop linking the rainforest of Lore Lindu National Park to the islands of the Togean archipelago is one of the more rewarding trip structures available in Sulawesi. The two destinations are 8 hours of road apart but cover entirely different ecosystems — montane endemic-bird forest in Lore Lindu, atoll-and-fringing-reef in the Togeans — and the contrast across a single 12–14 day trip produces a fuller picture of Central Sulawesi than either destination alone.

This is the working mountain-to-reef itinerary.

The premise

Both Lore Lindu and the Togeans are harder-to-reach than the standard Sulawesi destinations, and most travellers visit only one. Combining them in a single trip means accepting the extra transit days; the reward is a contrast that fewer than 2% of Sulawesi visitors experience.

A 14-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Palu.

• Fly into Palu Mutiara airport.
• Overnight in Palu. Visit Tugu Nosarara memorial; orient the trip.

Days 2–7: Lore Lindu (6 nights).

• Day 2: Drive 3 hours to Wuasa (the northern park base).
• Days 3–5: Three full days of birding in the montane and lower-elevation forest. Hire a specialist guide.
• Day 6: Lake Lindu day trip from Wuasa.
• Day 7: Drive back to Palu via Kulawi.

Day 8: Palu to Tentena.

• Drive 6 hours.
• Overnight in Tentena.

Day 9: Tentena to Ampana.

• Lake Poso morning (eel cages, brief lake visit).
• Drive to Ampana (4 hours).
• Overnight in Ampana.

Day 10: Ferry to the Togeans.

• Morning ferry from Ampana to Wakai (6 hours).
• Speedboat to Kadidiri.
• Late afternoon arrival.

Days 11–13: Togean Islands.

• Day 11: Snorkelling and rest.
• Day 12: Day trip to Bajau village or Una Una.
• Day 13: Day at the Kadidiri reefs.

Day 14: Return.

• Morning ferry to Ampana.
• Drive to Luwuk for the evening flight (5 hours).
• Or drive back to Palu (12 hours) — choose based on flight availability.

What you cover

The trip covers:

• The richest endemic bird concentration in Sulawesi.
• The Bada Valley (optional side-trip). Add 3 days to extend.

What you skip

The trip bypasses:

• Tana Toraja (separate trip).
• The whole north and south of the island.
• Wakatobi (separate trip).

Logistical considerations

Driver and car. Hire for the full overland section (Days 1–9 and Day 14). Expect €71 per day with car, driver, and fuel.

Birding guide. Specialist guide for Lore Lindu adds €29–€38 per day. Through Wuasa village or Indonesian bird-guide networks pre-trip.

Togean transfers. Through your Kadidiri homestay; expect €24–€38 per person for the Wakai-Kadidiri speedboat.

Buffer days. Build in 1–2 buffer days for the Ampana ferry, which can be cancelled in choppy conditions.

When to go

May–September dry season. The Lore Lindu trails and the Ampana ferry both work most reliably in this window. October is workable; November–April is harder.

May–July is the sweet spot.
