Diving Triangle: Lembeh, Bunaken, and Bangka in 10 Days

The three principal North Sulawesi dive areas — Bunaken's reef walls, Lembeh's muck slopes, and Bangka Island's soft-coral seamounts — sit within day-trip-and-transfer distance of each other. A 10-day trip covering all three is the established "diving triangle" itinerary and one of the most species-dense diving trips available anywhere in Indonesia. The geographical setup

• Bunaken Marine Park. West of Manado, 40 minutes by boat from Pasar Bersehati. Wall diving, soft corals, large schools, turtles, occasional pelagics.
• Lembeh Strait. East of Manado, 90 minutes by road to Bitung then 15 minutes by boat. Muck diving on black volcanic sand. Critters.
• Bangka Island. North of Manado, 90 minutes by road then 30 minutes by boat. Soft-coral seamounts, schooling fish, dramatic underwater topography.

All three reachable from Manado as the central hub. Transfers between any pair: 3–4 hours including the drive across the Minahasa peninsula.

A working 10-day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival. Fly into Manado. Transfer to first dive base (typically Bunaken). Check dive at the house reef in the afternoon.

Days 2–4: Bunaken (3 nights, 9 dives).

• Lekuan walls, Sachiko's Point, Fukui (dawn bumpheads), Mike's Point, Tanjung Kopi at Mantehage.
• Optional: a Manado Tua hike on a non-dive afternoon.

Day 5: Transfer Bunaken → Bangka.

• Morning dive at Bunaken, lunch.
• Boat to Manado, 90-minute drive across peninsula, boat to Bangka.
• Afternoon arrival; settle in.

Days 6–7: Bangka (2 nights, 5–6 dives).

Day 8: Transfer Bangka → Lembeh.

The transfer logistics

The transfers are the friction in this itinerary:

Bunaken → Bangka: Resort boat to Manado (40 min) + drive (90 min) + boat to Bangka (30 min). Total: 3 hours including loading time. Costs €38–€71 per person depending on group size and arrangement.

Bangka → Lembeh: Boat to Manado area (30 min) + drive across peninsula (1.5 hours) + boat to Lembeh (15 min). Total: 2.5 hours.

Most resorts package the transfers. When booking, confirm transfer is included; otherwise budget €71–€119 per transfer.

What you'll see

Bunaken sightings:

• Schools of jacks, Lutjanus, surgeonfish.
• Hawksbill and green turtles (almost every dive).
• Soft corals, large barrel sponges, gorgonian fans.
• Occasional whitetip reef sharks.
• Dolphins on the surface intervals near Sachiko's.

Bangka sightings:

• Dense soft-coral fields.
• Schooling jacks and barracuda.
• Strong reef-fish biomass.
• Reef sharks more reliable than at Bunaken.

Lembeh sightings:

• Hairy frogfish, blue-ringed octopus.
• Wonderpus, sometimes mimic octopus.
• Mandarin fish at sunset.
• Flamboyant cuttlefish.
• Various pygmy seahorses.
• Cardinalfish carrying eggs.

A serious macro list from Lembeh runs 30–50 named species across a 3-night stay.

When to go

The North Sulawesi diving is best March–November. April–June and September–October are the strongest windows for surface conditions; July–August is fine but slightly choppier on the easterly-exposed sites. December–February brings the northwest monsoon and surface roughness, particularly on the Bangka and Mantehage-side sites.

The optimal window for the full triangle: May or September.

Equipment notes

Standard recreational dive equipment. North Sulawesi water is 27–29°C; a 3mm shorty or full suit is sufficient for most divers.

For Lembeh specifically:

• A focus light significantly improves macro spotting.
• A critter pointer (a metal probe used by guides to position critters for photos) is owned by your guide; you don't need one.
• A camera. Lembeh exists because of macro photography; serious dives are wasted without a camera for most divers.

Skill level

The diving across all three sites is broadly intermediate. Specific demands:

• Bunaken Lekuan walls: Easy. Buoyancy required for the wall edge but no current.
• Sachiko's Point: Drift, sometimes strong. Advanced certification recommended.
• Bangka Sahaung: Strong current. Advanced.
• Lembeh muck: Easy diving but demanding buoyancy. Hovering for 5 minutes over a small subject is a real skill.

Most resorts will calibrate the dive plan to your certification level and request.

Alternative routings

Subtract Bangka for a shorter trip:

• Bunaken (4 nights) + Lembeh (4 nights) = 9 days. The standard 9-day itinerary; covers the two principal environments. Costs €1,936–€2,464.

Add Tangkoko wildlife for a 12-day version:

• Standard 10-day + 2 nights Tangkoko before flying out. Adds tarsiers, macaques, and a different photography experience.

Replace Bangka with Pulisan:

• Bunaken + Pulisan + Lembeh. Pulisan is closer to Bunaken than Bangka, transfers easier. Soft-coral and reef diving without Bangka's intensity.

A note on what this trip is for

The Diving Triangle is a diving trip. It is not a cultural trip; not a beach trip; not a relaxing trip. The non-diving hours are largely briefings, surface intervals, equipment maintenance, and recovery sleep. Non-diving partners on this trip will be bored.

For dive-focused travellers, however, it is one of the most rewarding 10-day trips available in Indonesia. The three environments are genuinely different and the combined biodiversity is exceptional. Most divers who complete the Diving Triangle return for a second visit within a few years.
