Where to Eat in Manado: A Neighbourhood Guide

Door F. Karuna22 Oct8 min lezen

A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood food guide to Manado — Jalan Wakeke for breakfast tinutuan, the Tinoor highland strip for proper Minahasan dinner, Pasar 45 for casual lunches.

Manado has a stronger food scene than its size suggests. The Minahasan culinary tradition — chilli, ginger, lime, basil, generous pork — is genuinely distinctive, and the city itself has a tight cluster of established warungs and restaurants alongside the resort and Boulevard chain restaurants visitors usually default to. A two-day Manado food tour worked across the neighbourhoods produces a fuller picture of Minahasan food than the typical hotel-restaurant exposure.

This is a neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood guide to eating well in Manado.

Boulevard and the city centre

The bay-front strip where most tourist hotels cluster. Convenience over character, but a few places worth knowing:

Wisata Bahari. The established Boulevard restaurant for Minahasan food, with views over the bay. Reliable woku ikan, decent rica-rica, a useful first-night option for visitors. €5–€9 per person. The drawback: it's the most-tourist-focused of the listed places.

Raja Sate. Sate (skewered meat) specialist, with chicken and beef versions. Useful for travellers who want lighter mainstream Indonesian after a stretch of dense Minahasan food.

Tinoor Indah (city branch). The Boulevard outpost of the famous highland restaurant. Strong rica-rica and woku, slightly cheaper than the highland original.

For a first-night meal at a Boulevard hotel, Wisata Bahari is the convenient default. The food is good without being remarkable.

Pasar 45 and the old town

The heritage core of central Manado. Best for breakfast and casual lunch:

Tinutuan strip on Jalan Wakeke. Several warungs serving the breakfast porridge from 06:00 to 11:00. Tinutuan Ria and Tinutuan Wakeke are the references. €1–€2.

Pasar 45 food court. Casual Indonesian, mixed stalls, busy lunchtime. Try the bakso and the small cakalang fufu portions. €0.50–€1.50.

Coffee at Bukit Doa Coffee. Smaller cafe near the old town with a good single-origin Minahasan coffee selection.

Tinoor and the highland strip

The road from Manado up to Tomohon is lined with woku-and-rica-rica restaurants with sweeping views back over Manado Bay. This is where the better Minahasan food is:

Tinoor Indah (highland original). The reference for highland Minahasan eating. Long-running, slightly higher prices than the city, the views justify it. €7–€12 per person.

Pondok Hijau. Closer to Tomohon, with garden seating. Strong woku belanga (the multi-protein woku pot).

Selera Manado. Smaller, slightly cheaper, similar menu. Worth visiting if Tinoor and Pondok Hijau are crowded.

For visitors with one Minahasan-food dinner in the wider region, a Tinoor highland restaurant is the right choice. Allow 90 minutes for the drive up plus the meal.

Tomohon market area

The Tomohon highlands have their own restaurant cluster, separate from the Tinoor strip. Useful for travellers visiting Pasar Tomohon:

Rumah Makan Anugrah. Local-style Minahasan, generous portions, low prices.

Bukit Inspirasi. Near Bukit Doa, with the cooler-air highland setting.

Most Tomohon restaurants serve traditional bush-meat dishes (paniki bat, tikus hutan bush rat) alongside conventional meat. Visitors who want to skip the bush-meat options can do so without issue; the conventional menu is full and rewarding on its own.

Bahu and the southern coast

The southern Manado coast, where the dive resorts cluster. Most resort guests eat at their resorts, but a few standalone options exist:

Restoran Pinangsia. Bahu-area Chinese-Minahasan restaurant. Strong seafood with a particular line in bakkwa-style cured pork and ikan bakar with Minahasan sauces.

Several beachfront warungs at Tasik Ria. Casual evening eating with fresh fish.

For diving guests at the southern resorts, the in-resort dining is generally good. A single evening venturing out to Pinangsia adds character.

Pasar Bersehati

The fish-and-spice market at the harbour, mainly useful for morning shopping rather than eating, but with a few interesting market warungs:

The dawn coffee stalls. Around 05:00 when the fish boats arrive, small coffee-and-roti stalls open serving market workers. The atmosphere is the point.

Cakalang fufu vendors. Smoked skipjack tuna, sold by the piece. Eat one before leaving the market.

The market itself is the activity, with eating as a side benefit.

A two-day Manado food plan

For visitors who want a working food tour:

Day 1

  • 06:30: Tinutuan at Jalan Wakeke.
  • 10:00: Pasar Bersehati walk, cakalang fufu snack.
  • 13:00: Lunch at Pasar 45 food court.
  • 17:00: Drive to Tinoor.
  • 18:30: Sunset dinner at Tinoor Indah highland.

Day 2

  • 07:00: Coffee at Bukit Doa Coffee.
  • 09:00: Drive to Pasar Tomohon, walk the market.
  • 12:00: Lunch at Rumah Makan Anugrah, Tomohon.
  • 15:00: Return to Manado.
  • 19:00: Dinner at Pinangsia (Bahu) for the Chinese-Minahasan crossover.

Two days, six distinct meal experiences, with three of them at the highest-quality end of the city's range.

Drinks across the day

For travellers wanting to track the wider Manado drink culture:

  • Morning coffee. Manado has a strong specialty coffee scene; Bukit Doa Coffee and Manado Coffee Specialty are reliable.
  • Afternoon ginger tea (saraba) is less common in Manado than in Makassar; the local equivalent is cap tikus (palm spirit), which is alcoholic and best approached carefully.
  • Evening beer. Manado is one of the easier Indonesian cities to find beer; Bintang and the Boulevard hotel bars work.

The Christian-majority demographic of Manado makes alcohol more available than in most of Sulawesi.

Where should you eat in Manado? Three useful zones: Jalan Wakeke for breakfast tinutuan (06:00–11:00), the Tinoor highland restaurants on the road to Tomohon for proper Minahasan rica-rica and woku at dinner (try Tinoor Indah or Pondok Hijau), and Wisata Bahari on Boulevard for a convenient first-night meal with bay views. Add Pasar Bersehati for an atmospheric morning walk.
