Kendari Travel Guide: Southeast Sulawesi's Quiet Capital

Kendari is the capital of Southeast Sulawesi and the gateway to Wakatobi, but it gets almost no airtime in international travel writing. Around 380,000 people live here. The city is laid out around a long bay, sits at the foot of a green hill range, and runs on nickel mining, fishing, and a small but real domestic tourism trade. For most international travellers, Kendari is a connecting point between Makassar and Wakatobi. For travellers willing to stay a day, it is a quietly likeable Indonesian provincial capital with one of the country's best fish markets.

This is a short guide for travellers passing through, plus a one-day list for visitors who choose to stay.

Getting to Kendari

Haluoleo Airport (KDI) sits 26 km west of the city, with daily Garuda, Lion Air, and Wings Air flights from Makassar (75 min), Jakarta (2 hr 45 min), and Surabaya (90 min). Fares €33–€71.

Onward to Wakatobi: daily Wings Air flight to Wangi-Wangi (45 min, €43–€62). The Wakatobi flight is small (ATR-72) and books out quickly in season; reserve at the same time as your inbound.

Sea connections: the Pelni KM Sangiang and KM Tilongkabila both call at Kendari on long-loop routes through eastern Indonesia. Useful for backpackers with time; impractical for most.

What to see

Pasar Sentral Mandonga. The central market. Functional, busy, and a useful walk for travellers with a half-day. Spices, fresh fruit, ikat textiles from Buton.

Pasar Ikan Pelabuhan. The harbour fish market. The catch comes in from 04:00 onwards; by 06:00 the floor is covered in tuna, mackerel, snapper, grouper, and the local skipjack landed by the small boats. The most photogenic place in Kendari at sunrise.

Teluk Kendari. The bay walk. Around 17:00 the promenade fills with families and food vendors selling pisang epe and grilled corn. Three bridges span the bay; the western views are best at sunset.

Masjid Al-Alam. A modern mosque on a small island in the bay, accessible by a 1.4 km causeway. Architectural rather than spiritual interest for non-Muslim visitors; the late-afternoon walk is the draw.

Where to stay

Two useful brackets:

• Mid-range. Swiss-Belhotel Kendari and Plaza Inn Kendari, both modern, both with city or bay views. €29–€48.
• Budget. Guesthouses around Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan A. Yani. €12–€19.

Wakatobi-bound travellers who want one calm night before the flight should choose Swiss-Belhotel and book the airport transfer through them.

What to eat

Kendari food is recognisably Buginese with Bugis-Tolaki adaptations: heavy on grilled fish, generous with sambal, and pork-free (the city is overwhelmingly Muslim).

• Sinonggi — sago porridge, the Tolaki staple. Sweet, gelatinous, eaten with grilled fish and a clear kuah. Try at Sinonggi Bertha or any rumah makan Tolaki.
• Karasi — a Tolaki coconut-and-sago sweet, available at markets.
• Ikan bakar — grilled fish. The bay-front warungs are good after sunset.

When to visit

The dry season runs May–October. Kendari is hot year-round (typical highs 31°C), with a wet season of warm afternoon rains November–April. Nothing closes seasonally; the dry months are simply more comfortable.

Onward from Kendari

Most travellers continue to Wakatobi by air. Other useful onward options:

• Bau-Bau (Buton Island) — ferry from Kendari, the city of the old Buton Sultanate. Two hours.
• Kolaka and West Sulawesi — ferry across to Bone, then Trans-Sulawesi to Makassar. The overland circle.
• Banggai Islands — long Pelni route, infrequent.

Kendari does not advertise itself well. Visitors who stay a day usually leave glad they did.

Is Kendari worth a stop on the way to Wakatobi? For most travellers, a single night in Kendari is enough to break the journey and book the morning Wakatobi flight. Worth one extra night for the harbour fish market at sunrise, the bay-front evening walk at Teluk Kendari, and a meal of sinonggi — sago porridge — at a Tolaki-style restaurant.
